A wildlife photo tour in the Congo Basin is reminiscent of a bygone era. Here, trekking in the jungle is a true adventure and it is one of the few places on Earth that is still truly wild. The Congo is often called the “lungs of Africa,” and is home to a wide variety of unique species, many of which are endemic to the region, including lowland gorillas, forest elephants, bongo and more.Â
Trekking to photograph critically endangered lowland gorillas is undoubtedly the highlight. Treks begin early in the morning, and after a briefing from the guides, you embark on a hike into the dense jungle, following well-established trails, navigating through the thick forest, or crossing waist-deep in water as you track gorilla families. The trek can be physically demanding, with uneven terrain, muddy paths, and thick vegetation, but the reward of seeing these incredible apes in the wild makes it more than worth the effort.
Accommodation in the Congo Basin is at charming and comfortable eco-lodges.
