With over 90% of its wildlife found nowhere else, Madagascar is one of the most biodiverse places on Earth. The island’s most famous residents, lemurs, provide endless photographic opportunities: from the playful troops of ring-tailed lemurs, to the graceful, leaping sifakas, and the adorable, teddy bear-like indri. Madagascar is also a hotspot for macro photographers, boasting nearly half of the world’s chameleon species, including the dazzling panther chameleon, the tiny Brookesia, and the expertly camouflaged leaf-tailed gecko. Bird photographers will find an extraordinary array of subjects, such as the striking Madagascar paradise flycatcher, the rare helmet vanga, and the powerful Madagascar fish eagle.
Beyond its wildlife, Madagascar’s diverse landscapes provide stunning backdrops for photography. The Avenue of the Baobabs, with its towering ancient trees, is especially breathtaking at sunrise and sunset, while the jagged limestone formations of Tsingy de Bemaraha create otherworldly compositions.
Since lemurs in most parts of Madagascar are habituated to people, the majority of wildlife photography here is done on foot. Most accommodations are simple but comfortable, but there are a couple truly elegant and luxurious eco-lodges available.
